SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A Bay Area church’s efforts to feed the needy during the holidays was hijacked by a group of people receiving donated bags of free groceries and selling them.
And it’s all on tape.
At first glance, it appears that the security guards delivering canned foods to Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco. But after a few minutes, the cans are found dumped on the side of a building — because they weren’t wanted.
In fact, a lot of the food that was supposed to be given to people in need gets dumped.
So. Why would people get in line to get food for the needy if these people are not really in need?
Every year, Glide Memorial Church located on Rev. Cecil Williams Way, also known as Ellis Street, hands out bags of groceries to people in need.
But every once in a while there are people that take advantage of this generosity.
KRON 4’s Stanley Roberts caught a few people receiving bags of free food then quickly turnaround and sell it for about $5.
You’re probably thinking, “It’s their bags. They can do whatever they want.” And you’re correct.
Stanley takes a closer look at what’s happening here and finds people emptying out the food that was given to them into backpacks and suitcases, and return to the line several more times to get more free bags of food.
Glide permitted only one bag of donated groceries per household.
Footage shows that some of this food will never make to any one’s table. Instead, it will end up in a landfill
Also caught on tape: a couple of ladies by the garbage can tossing away food they don’t need or can’t sell.
