UPDATE: Bridge Device Appears Harmless

Update 3:44 p.m. After manipulating the device for several minutes and banging it against the concrete the item is open and it appears some sort of paper was inside.

Update 3:37 p.m. Pictures from our helicopter partners at SKY7HD/ABC7News show the bomb squad’s robot manipulating a small piece of pipe with caps on both ends. The robot appeared to smash the device against a concrete divider. Pictures and video to come.

Update 3:35 p.m. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim says several players, including Albert Pujols, will have to take BART to tonight’s game with the A’s at the Coliseum because of the Bay Bridge closure.

Update 3:22 p.m. Traffic can now be seen going at full speed in both directions on the Bay Bridge

Update 3:14 p.m. KRON 4′s Dan Kerman reports traffic is moving on the eastbound side of the bridge.

Update 2:57 p.m. The CHP is now tweeting “Traffic on the SFOBB will NOT be closed at this time. Slow traffic breaks will be provided by CHP units.”

BAY BRIDGE — The San Francisco Bay Bridge is being shut down in both directions this afternoon due to an investigation of a suspicious device found on the eastbound Treasure Island offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The eastbound Treasure Island onramp and westbound Treasure Island offramp are both already closed due to the investigation, according to CHP Officer Ron Simmons.

The device was reported at 12:52 p.m.
