OAKLAND (KRON) — Nearly three dozen people are getting help from the Red Cross in finding a place to stay after an explosion and fire damaged two buildings in Oakland.

One witness says she thought she heard gunfire or a car crash when the blaze broke out in a building with retail on the ground floor and apartments above it on International Blvd near 23rd Avenue late Wednesday night.

Investigators say it appears the fire started on the second floor residential area above the Oakland Bait Shop. The fire spread to another nearby building, investigators say.

The cause of the fire remains unclear. There are no reports of injuries to residents or firefighters.

Fire officials say about 25 people will need help finding another place to stay because of the damage to the two buildings.
