FERGUSON, Missouri (KRON) — Authorities say six-year police veteran Darren Wilson is the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown in suburban St. Louis, Missouri.

Ferguson police chief Thomas Jackson says Officer Wilson was responding to a sick call just before noon on August 9th when dispatchers reported a strong armed robbery at a convenience store.

Minutes later Jackson says Officer Wilson encountered Michael Brown, who may have matched the description of a suspect in the robbery. Previously authorities have said Wilson and Michael Brown struggled for a weapon inside the officer’s patrol car. Witnesses say the officer shot Brown as he was trying to run away. CNN is reporting the strong armed robbery involved a suspect who allegedly punched someone and stole a cigar from the store.

Chief Jackson is also releasing a packet of additional information and the sequence of events.

The shooting has prompted days of sometimes violent protests in the St. Louis suburb. Protest continued Thursday night without confrontation with state police who have taken over security in the area.
