VALLEY SPRINGS (KRON) — Calaveras County Sheriff’s deputies say the investigation into the stabbing death of eight-year old Leila Fowler is moving in the right direction.
Detectives say they are continuing to gather evidence and look into the possibility of a connection between DNA gathered at the scene and a man arrested Tuesday for the attempted kidnapping of a baby in Placerville.
“Really we are in the beginning stages but we’re making progress, a lot of progress,” Calaveras County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Hewitt tells reporters including KRON 4′s J.R. Stone. “From what I’ve been told it could take up to two weeks for the DNA analysis to come through. We’re of course hoping that it will be a shorter time period.”
Leila’s 12-year old brother says he found the child stabbed to death at about noon on Saturday. He says he saw an intruder leaving the home just before the discovery.
Authorities aren’t saying how much questioning the boy and his parents have undergone. All three are now grieving at a location outside Calaveras County, authorities say. Investigators say they are also looking for surveillance video in the area in hopes of spotting the killer leaving the scene. Detectives are also looking at possible connection with an open unsolved case out of Oakland.
Deputies say they have interviewed all registered sex offenders and parolees in the area but so far none may be considered a suspect.
