SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — Police say they’re conducting more patrols near San Leandro’s John Muir Middle School after a man tried to lure a student into his van.

The victim says she was walking home from school on Williams Street near Orchard at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday when the man pulled to the curb and asked if she wanted a ride.

The girl says she said “no” but the man continued to question her and try to get her to go with him. Eventually the student says she turned away and walked to a group of friends nearby. The van was last seen leaving the area on Williams Street, police say.

“It’s important to educate your children on the dangers of stranger contacts,” San Leandro police Lt. Mike Sobek says in a written statement. “A stern ‘NO’ like what was used in this case is helpful in preventing abductions. Also, reporting these incidents as quickly as you can will help law enforcement catch predators like this.”

Police say they didn’t learn of the incident until Friday. Patrol officers are out in force Friday in the neighborhood surrounding the school to make sure the students stay safe.

The driver is described only as a White or Hispanic man driving a white van.
