REDWOOD CITY (KRON) – A leading Stanford researcher and 49ers team doctor found dead Wednesday was the focus of a criminal investigation, sources tell KRON 4’s Maureen Kelly.
Dr. Daniel Garza was being investigated by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department for alleged inappropriate behavior involving adult interns, sources say.
Law enforcement officials wouldn’t comment on the nature of the charges citing the ongoing nature of the investigation but they did say the criminal probe started before the doctor’s body was found at his home in Redwood City’s Emerald Lake Hills neighborhood.

The San Mateo county Coroner’s office says they are investigating Garza’s death as a possible suicide.
In addition to being the medical director for the San Francisco 49ers, Garza was a leading researcher in concussion and brain related injuries at Stanford University where he was also a well- liked assistant professor at their medical school.
Stanford officials say they were made aware of the possible criminal activity and alerted law enforcement.
A spokesman for the 49ers says they were also alerted by Stanford about the investigation into Garza but had no further comment about the allegations against their now deceased team doctor.
