FAIRFIELD (KRON) — Crews in Solano County have contained a five-alarm fire that destroyed a home and forced the evacuations of several residents.

Firefighters responded to the blaze sometime after 3:45 p.m. at an area off Interstate 680 near Gold Hills Road in Fairfield. Officials say the fire was brought under control just before 8 p.m.

According to fire officials, two homes were damaged, one of them was destroyed, after a brush fire quickly escalated to a raging fire that threatened several structures.

“We’ve evacuated about 40 homes,” said Solano County Sheriff Deputy Daryl Snedeker. “There are no reports of injuries, as far as I know, at this point.”

Evacuations are expected to be lifted at about 10 p.m. tonight.

Firefighters had to battle gusty winds and high temperatures. Winds are expected to stay in the 16-20 mph range until about 10 p.m.

Officials had temporarily closed 680 as a result of the fire but have since reopened all lanes in both directions.

Motorists should use caution while driving through the area as crews continue to work the scene.
