SANTA CRUZ (BCN)–A former employee at an athletic club north of Santa Cruz was arrested last week on suspicion of stealing thousands of dollars in tools from the business, Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputies said Friday.

Carlos Ruiz, 40, of Santa Cruz was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary.

Deputies responded last Tuesday to the La Madrona Athletic Club on La Madrona Drive in response to an overnight commercial burglary.

Deputies said two men broke into the athletic club and stole $6,000 worth of tools.

The manager of the club gave investigators surveillance video that showed the two suspects and a white truck involved in the burglary.

Deputies said one of the men was a former employee.

Deputies were able to track the truck back to a residence in the 500 block of 13th Avenue and made contact with Ruiz, who was in possession of the stolen tools, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was arrested, but investigators have not been able to identify the second suspect believed to be involved in the burglary.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on the burglary to call (831) 471-1121.
