FREMONT (KRON) — When classes open in Fremont schools on August 27th, 9th grade students won’t be using a controversial sex education textbook.
The Fremont school board voted to send “Your Health Today” back to the publishers to request some changes. When the kids start the school year they will be using last year’s textbook but won’t be allowed the take it home.
The decision follows outcry from many parents and community activists who insist the new book contains themes and subject matter inappropriate for young teens.
Opponents of the book had gathered more than 2,500 signatures on a petition asking the district to pull “Your Health Today.”
The petition says the textbook “exposes youth to sexual games, sexual fantasies, sexual bondage with handcuffs, ropes, and blindfolds, sexual toys and vibrator devices, and additional instruction that is extremely inappropriate for 13 and 14 year-old youth.”
School officials say it’s unclear if McGraw Hill, the publisher of the book, will make the requested changes. The book’s author as said that it was written for an audience of college students.
