WASHINGTON (AP) – Despite a spike in tensions between South Asia’s nuclear rivals, India’s ambassador says her country wants closer trade ties with archrival Pakistan.

Nirupama Rao also said Friday that overland trade from war-battered Afghanistan to India via Pakistan would be a boon to regional stability.

Rao is New Delhi’s envoy to Washington. Her comments come despite a fraying in recently improved relations between the nuclear rivals.

India this week accused Pakistan of involvement in a militant attack in Kashmir, and Pakistan’s parliament condemned India’s hanging of a Kashmiri man convicted in a terror attack that New Delhi blamed on Pakistan.

Rao said India is waiting for Pakistan to implement its decision to grant India “most favored nation” trade status. She said that would boost confidence and allow closer trade ties.
