SAN JOSE (BCN) — A 69-year-old San Jose man died and his granddaughter was injured earlier this week after a jack the man used to lift up his car slipped and the vehicle dropped onto them, San Jose police said today.
The man killed in the accident has been identified as Edward Cotriss, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.
Cotriss had used a car jack to get under his Ford Mustang to service it in the 3600 block of Slopeview Drive in East San Jose when the car fell off the jack at about 6 p.m. Monday, police Sgt. Heather Randol said.
The vehicle came down on him and his 5-year-old granddaughter, who was beneath the car with him, Randol said.
San Jose firefighters were called to the scene and lifted the car up to free the pair, according to fire spokesman Capt. Cleo Doss.
Medical responders transported both to a hospital, where the man died and the girl survived, Doss said.
