OAKLAND – A fugitive and alleged serial car thief who was wanted in counties all over the Bay Area for a host of crimes was arrested in Berkeley this week and will appear in Alameda County Superior Court on Friday, authorities said today.
Dimitri Storm, 42, was arrested early Tuesday and is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on $312,000 bail, according to jail records.
He was captured in the 1500 block of Summit Road in the Grizzly Peak area at about 4 a.m. after police received a report of a man trying car door handles and attempting to break into vehicles, Berkeley police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, theft, obstructing an officer and providing a false name, Coats said. She said Storm identified himself to officers as James Prouty Rollston.
As he was being taken into custody, Storm “started physically fighting with the officers,” Coats said.
Storm suffered minor injuries in the altercation and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being transferred to the jail in Dublin, Coats said.
Storm is wanted for a variety of crimes in counties including Santa Cruz, Monterey, Marin, Sonoma and Santa Clara. At least two $1 million warrants had been issued for his arrest, in Santa Cruz and Sonoma counties, Coats said
In Santa Cruz County, the district attorney’s office has filed felony burglary and vehicle theft charges against Storm, as well as several misdemeanor charges. The charges stem from an auto burglary in Ben Lomond on March 31 and home burglaries and vehicle thefts in Santa Cruz on April 2.
However, it is not yet clear when Storm will appear in Santa Cruz County Superior Court to face those charges because so many other charges are pending against him in other jurisdictions.
Storm has been at the top of the Santa Cruz County sheriff’s “Most Wanted” list for weeks.
The sheriff’s office held a news conference in the Santa Cruz Mountains last week to warn residents that Storm was still on the loose and to remind them to lock their cars and homes.
Among other crimes, Storm is alleged to have stolen a GMC Acadia in Windsor in early April.
When Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies tried to pull over the stolen SUV in Petaluma on April 5, there was a confrontation in which the deputies tried to use a Taser on Storm.
He fled, driving to the Woodacre area in Marin County, where he slipped away, authorities said.
On April 17, deputies spotted Storm in a stolen Lexus in the Carmel area in Monterey County, but he got away by driving through a construction zone. He later stole a Jeep Cherokee, in which he allegedly led police on a chase and nearly struck a patrol car, authorities said.
Storm’s arraignment is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
