Multiple Injuries After Muni Light Rail Vehicle Collides with Big Rig

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Emergency crews are at the scene of a major collision involving a Muni light rail vehicle and an 18 wheeler semi truck in San Francisco’s Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood.
The accident was reported at 1:49 p.m. at the intersection of Third and Innes streets.
The crash occurred moments after a Muni bus collided with a dump truck on Geary.
Witnesses tell KRON 4 that the big rig made a left turn in front of the light rail vehicle, which was carrying several passengers, causing the train to derail by several feet.
San Francisco police said that the semi truck which was traveling north bound on 3rd made an illegal left hand turn onto Innes from 3rd street in front of the Muni vehicle.
Up to 20 people sustained injuries in the accident, 11 people have been transported to a nearby hospital.
The driver was not yet cited at this time until the conclusion of the investigation.
Police say that the area will remain closed from Jerrold to Hudson along 3rd street until about 5 p.m. Crews are also working to clean up fuel that is leaking from the big rig.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) says the accident is causing some delays and that the 54-Felton bus will route around the area.
