SANTA ROSA — A pedestrian was severely injured late Friday when a motorist struck him as he walked in a crosswalk near Santa Rosa Junior College, according to Santa Rosa police.

At about 10:40 p.m. Friday, police responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident in the area of Mendocino and Silva avenues in Santa Rosa about a block north of the college, police said.

Officers at the scene found the male pedestrian, who is not being identified, lying in the northbound lanes of Mendocino just north of Silva, according to police.

He had been walking in a crosswalk across Mendocino heading east toward Silva when a 2011 Toyota Venza driven by Edward Kelleher, 74, of Santa Rosa, crashed into him.

The victim suffered severe injuries and was transported by emergency responders for treatment.

Police are investigating the accident, but it does not appear that Kelleher was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or traveling at an excessive speed prior to striking the pedestrian, officers said.
