BERKELEY (KRON) — Caltrans will temporarily close Bore #2, the leftmost eastbound bore, of the Caldecott Tunnel overnight on Friday, Saturday, and possibly Sunday nights two weekends in August, officials announced.

The eastbound Tunnel Road on-ramp will also be closed at these times. The purpose of the closure is to complete the realignment of the eastbound approach to the tunnel’s second bore. During the Bore #2 closures, eastbound traffic will be able to continue to use Bore #1. Westbound traffic on SR-24 will not be impacted by this closure.

Five- to twenty-minute delays for traffic traveling in the eastbound direction on State Route 24 are anticipated during the closures.

Pending favorable weather conditions and the completion of preparatory work, the following closures are planned:

Friday, August 8, 8 p.m. – Saturday, August 9, 12 p.m. (Noon):

  • The eastbound Bore #2 will be closed to traffic. Eastbound motorists may use Bore #1

Saturday, August 9, 8 p.m. – Sunday, August 10, 12 p.m. (Noon):

  • The eastbound Bore #2 will be closed. Eastbound motorists may use Bore #1

Sunday, August 10, 8 p.m. – Monday, August 11, 7 a.m.:

  • The eastbound Bore #2 will be closed. Eastbound motorists may use Bore #1

Weekend of August 15 – August 17:

Caltrans anticipates that the realignment work will be completed the weekend of August 9. However, if work is not completed the weekend of August 9, Caltrans will continue the work the following weekend, with the following schedule:

  • Friday, August 15, 8 p.m. – Saturday, August 16, 12 p.m. (Noon)
  • Saturday August 15, 8 p.m. – Sunday, August 17, 12 p.m. (Noon)
  • Sunday, August 16, 8 p.m. – Monday, August 18, 7 a.m.

Purpose of Closures:

Since the Fourth Bore opened in late 2013, traffic using Bore #2 no longer needs to be shifted to accommodate both eastbound and westbound traffic during peak hours; Bore #2 is now permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic. In addition to signage and alignment changes to reflect the permanent dedication of the bore to eastbound traffic, the approach to Bore #2 will be regraded to smooth traffic flow and bring the lanes up to current freeway standards. This will result in a smoother approach to Bore #2, which will aid eastbound traffic flow.

In order to minimize disruptions to motorists, Caltrans has scheduled work to occur during a period of typically low traffic volume. We thank motorists in advance for their cooperation during the upcoming closure.
