SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Students at Sacred Heart will be wearing ties to school Friday in solidarity with a female classmate whose picture isn’t in the yearbook because she was wearing a tuxedo.
Jessica Urbina showed up for picture day wearing a tux, the required dress for boys getting their pictures taken. The rules say girls are supposed to wear dresses.
Now Urbina says the school has told her they can’t include the picture in the yearbook or show it at graduation set for next week.
Since Urina’s picture was posted online, the image has gone viral and many people are tweeting their support at #JessicasTux.
Many students say they will wear ties to school to show their support for their classmate. Urbina and her parents are due to meet with school administrators on Friday.
The school issued a statement expressing its pride in the students at the school.
“As we prepare to pass out yearbooks it is always regretful when a student portrait is omitted for any reason. As a community we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that all students are included in the future,” the statement reads. “We want to reassure our community that all graduating seniors are represented in the commencement program.”
