NOVATO (KRON) — Someone is leaving cats and kittens at the Marin Humane Society in the middle of the night but no one’s quite sure who it is.
Surveillance video shows someone driving up to the Marin Humane Society facility in Novato this week and leaving behind cardboard boxes filled with two dozen felines.
This is the fourth time in the last year and a half that this has happened. Almost all are black and white “tuxedo” cats.
“It’s clear the hearts of those who dropped off these animals are in the right place, however it’s important we find out where these cats are coming from so that we can offer assistance including spaying and neutering so this overbreeding doesn’t continue to happen,” Marin Humane Society spokeswoman Keri Fennell says in a written statement.
Officials say the surveillance cameras show these latest cats were dropped off by someone driving the same car in the previous incidents. However the images aren’t good enough to identify the vehicle or see its license plate.
“It would be so helpful to have some information about the cats and kittens,” Animal Care Manager Samantha Winegarner says. “We noticed one of the female cats was lactating but we weren’t sure which kittens were hers or if her kittens were even a part of the group that was dropped off. Fortunately, we were able to reunite momma and kittens but precious bonding time was lost.”
Because of the additional work needed vaccinating, microchipping, spaying or neutering, and evaluating these new cats, adoption fees for all cats are waived for the rest of the month.
