SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — A simple lesson about how to transfer a photo from your phone to a computer could cost a San Leandro High School computer teacher his job and possibly his freedom.
Police have arrested 45-year old Richard Styner for possession of child pornography and burglary because of an incident that started as a big surprise to his students.
“He accidentally clicked the wrong photo and showed his photo to the whole class,” student Lillian McLean tells KRON 4′s Rob Fladeboe. “Everybody was like whoa this is crazy, that was our teacher’s p-. Yeah.”
McLean says Styner apologized to students and even said the incident was going to cost him his career. He reported the incident to San Leandro police who launched an investigation.
Police say they found pornographic images on Styner’s work computer as well as hundreds of erotic stories. They also say they found evidence that the teacher had a key to an adult woman’s home and that he had stolen her underwear when she was out of town.
“He had a little freak side to him that didn’t need to be there, especially as a teacher to be around students,” McLean says.
“I want him to come back basically,” student Andre Carter says. “He’s a good teacher. The computer lab won’t be the same without that teacher coming back, Mr. Steiner.”
Police and school officials say the investigation is far from over. They’re looking for evidence that students might be victims in this case.
“We’re encouraging the community not to jump to any conclusions and to reserve judgment about Mr. Styner in this case,” defense attorney Seth Chazin tells KRON 4 News. “It’s way too early to form any conclusions.”
Styner is on unpaid leave. He’s due in court June 10th.
