CONTRA COSTA CO. — A driver in a stolen car is in the hospital after crashing into another car in Pittsburg Tuesday morning while allegedly attempting to evade sheriff’s deputies, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The pursuit started around 11:30 a.m. when a driver failed to yield after a sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull him over in the area of Clearland Circle in Bay Point, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The driver sped away, leading deputies on a pursuit into Pittsburg, but deputies stopped the chase after the suspect drove into oncoming traffic, Lee said.
About a mile away at the intersection of Leland Road and Railroad Avenue, the suspect crashed into another car.
The occupants of the second car were treated at the scene and released.
The suspect, a 25-year-old man whose name has not been released, suffered undisclosed injuries and was taken to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center Martinez, according to Lee. He is expected to survive.
A woman riding in his car was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with minor injuries.
Lee said the suspect’s vehicle was listed as stolen.
He remains in the hospital and is in custody on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading police, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and probation violation.
