LONDON (KRON) — The voice of Thomas the Tank Engine is going off the rails over money.
Martin T Sherman says he can’t live on what the producers of the popular children’s TV show pay him. He says he needs other acting jobs and assorted odd jobs just to get by.
“For the last five years it has been my great honor and pleasure to create the American voices of Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy,” Sherman said in a blog post that has since been taken down. “Unfortunately, I must now quit the show. It is embarrassing but the reason is that they are paying a very low wage. The terms they are offering are so poor, and this with the immense success of Thomas, that the only right thing for me to do is walk away. I have felt exploited for a while now. I believe it is important to move on from a situation if you are not valued.”
Sherman says the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise has earned the producers a quarter of a billion dollars. He says he is paid far below the minimum union scale he would get in the United States.
“After a lengthy negotiation period, unfortunately, we could not reach an agreement with Martin T Sherman and have decided to part ways,” Hit Entertainment said in a written statement. “We wish him the best in his future professional endeavors.”
It’s unclear who will be voicing Thomas in the future.
