SICILY (KRON) — James Gandolfini, a three-time Emmy Award winning actor for his role as Tony Soprano on HBO, has died of a heart attack, several news sources are reporting.

Gandolfini was in Italy to take part in an event with Italian director Gabriele Muccino at the 59th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.

The actor first drew attention in 1993 as a hitman in “True Romance.” In 1999 the producers of the Sopranos cast Gandolfini in the title role about a mobster with a sensitive side. The show ran for six seasons to popular and critical acclaim.

Other movie credits include “Get Shorty,” “The Mexican” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
