BROOKNEAL, VA (WSLS) – Two women are facing charges after the alleged assault of a Campbell County school bus driver.

According to Campbell County School Superintendent Dr. Robert Johnson it happened around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Alaya Machasio of Brookneal and Crystal Nicole Pannell, also of Brookneal were charged in connection with assault.

Johnson says the two women boarded the school bus to confront a student about a previous incident that occurred on the bus the day before on Tuesday. The bus driver then told the women to get off of the bus, but they continued.

According to Johnson, video footage taken from the school bus shows that the male school bus driver “did what he was trained to do and protected the students.”

The bus driver blocked the isle so the two women could not get to the students.

Johnson says the women then assaulted the man.

“We support the bus drivers and believe that he took the right action,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson there is physical evidence on the bus driver that shows he was assaulted. Machasio is charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing,

Pannell is charged with disorderly conduct, assault and battery and trespassing.

Both were released on recognizance and will appear in court on September 15th.
