UNION CITY (KRON) — A third grade teacher at Union City’s Alvarado School is due in court Friday to face 40 different allegations of child molestation involving young girls.
Union City police say they arrested Michael Howey after interviewing numerous girls he may have had contact with while serving as a teacher at the school.
KRON 4′s Maureen Kelly reports the investigation began on April 12th when a school employee walked into Howey’s third grade classroom and allegedly saw him touching a little girl inappropriately.
Since then police have interviewed a number of children which led to the charges announced Thursday.
Howey is facing 17 felony charges of Lewd and Lascivious Acts on a Child under the age of 14 and an additional 23 misdemeanor counts of annoying and molesting a child.
Authorities aren’t detailing exactly what Howey is accused of doing to the children but the crimes listed may involve some sort of abnormal sexual deviance.
New Haven School officials say Howey has no criminal record and has never been the subject of complaints during his 14 years as a school teacher in the district.
Police continue to look for more potential victims. They say most of the little girls who say they were abused are either eight or nine years old.
Howey remains in the Alameda County Jail on $1.5 million bond.
