HAYWARD (KRON) — A one-year old Rottweiler named “Champ” has a new nickname Thursday morning, “Hero.”
Firefighters and residents are crediting Champ with waking up an entire family when a fire broke out in the garage of the family home.
“He’s the one that woke me up,” resident Ishan Vaid tells KRON 4′s Will Tran. “He tried to park and I thought something is going wrong. He’s the one who saved us. You can tell from the way they bark, it wasn’t the kind of bark they usually do, so I thought something was going wrong.”
All three human residents of the house as well as Champ were waiting outside when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Vaid says Champ usually sleeps in the garage but recently had started spending the nights inside the house.
There are no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire remains unclear. The damage was confined to the garage so the house itself is still habitable.
