SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A horrific discovery at a local market. Maggots.

And not just anywhere, but in a meat case at the Whole Foods Market in Noe Valley.

Meat clerk Marc Melancon says he was shown the maggots in the case when he arrived at work on Monday afternoon, and there were more than 40 of them.

“I can actually see maggots underneath the plastic right near the meat that I was selling inside the case,” Melancon said.

The San Francisco Public Health Department tells KRON 4 News that Whole Foods told them all that was found was “one dead maggot” and it was “not in contact with the meat.”

According to health officials, the market said the case was cleaned Monday, Tuesday and Friday. The public health department said based on that information they believe “there was never a public health hazard.”

Health inspectors were at the market Friday and gave the meat department a clean bill of health, though they say a floor drain below the meat case could be the source of the problem.

Public health officials tell KRON 4 News that the entire meat case will be dismantled and cleaned again on Monday, and on Tuesday the entire meant department will be cleaned.
