SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — Squatters may be responsible for a fire that damaged an abandoned home in San Leandro Friday morning.

Neighbors called 911 at about 4:30 a.m. Friday to report flames pouring from the home 153rd Avenue just south of I-580 and Fairmont Drive.

Firefighters say when they arrived they found fire spilling from the window near a second story bedroom. They also found the windows boarded up and no furniture inside.

The cause of the fire remains unclear but officials tell KRON 4′s Mike Pelton they found evidence someone, possibly a homeless squatter, had been smoking cigarettes inside.

No one was inside the home when the fire department arrived and there are no reports of injuries.
