Woman Sexually Assaulted Near Telegraph Avenue

BERKELEY (BCN) — A woman was sexually assaulted while walking in Berkeley early Sunday, according to police.

The woman contacted police just after 2 .am. to report the assault, according to police Officer Jennifer Coats.

The woman, in her early 30s, said she was walking alone on a side street west of the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue when was attacked from behind by an unknown suspect.

The suspect knocked her from behind, committed a sexual assault, and then fled the area, Coats said.

She described the suspect as a mixed race male in his 30s, 6 feet tall with a muscular to heavy build and short hair, wearing a jacket.

Police have notified patrol officers and University of California at Berkeley police of the incident and provided extra patrols in the area.

Police are actively investigating this assault and are asking anyone from the public with information on this incident or any other suspicious activity to call the Special Victims Unit at (510) 981-5715 or the non-emergency number at (510) 981-5900. Anonymous tips can be made by calling the Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
